Management Team
Dr. Rüdiger Berlich

Rüdiger’s daily work bridges business and computer science. He earned his PhD in 2004 on parametric optimisation in physics research and completed an MBA summa cum laude in 2009, with a thesis on Open Source business models. Earlier, as of 1998, he served as lead consultant and technical manager of SuSE Linux AG’s U.S. office and then became Managing Director of its U.K. subsidiary — SuSE was then Europe’s leading Linux provider. He has since worked extensively in science and technology management across European and national projects. As a consultant, he offers interim management and specialised technical advice to clients in medical technology, automotive, logistics and engineering. Notably, he was Product Owner for Miltenyi Biotec’s Linux platforms and Product Manager (Software) for a surgical robot at Avatera Medical. Since 2001 he has been active in Grid and Cloud Computing research, later coordinating German and Swiss public relations for Europe’s largest EU Grid initiative. He has given many international presentations and organised conferences, graduate schools (e.g. GridKa School), and colloquia. As a particle physicist, he contributed to experiments at CERN (Geneva) and SLAC (Stanford), focusing on large-scale data analysis. Later he served as Deputy Head of a Cloud Research Department at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. He has worked with neural network classifiers since the start of my career and now focusses on generative AI for software development. As an Agile Coach, he explores how AI can complement agile methods. He is the author and maintainer of the Open Source C++ library Geneva, implementing advanced optimisation algorithms used in academia and industry. He is currently refactoring it for C++23 compliance, using AI-assisted, test-driven development with strong emphasis on requirements and architecture. He regularly publishes in German and UK technical journals. Outside of work, He enjoys hiking and cycling with his family, particularly along the Saint James Ways. During the Corona-years, from 2020–2022, he cycled from Lübeck to Santiago de Compostela together with his daughter — a journey of some 3300 km.
Dr. Ariel Garcia

Ariel has studied physics at the Balseiro Institute in Bariloche, Argentina. Since he finished his Ph.D. in Quantum Field Theory and Mathematical Physics, he has worked as a researcher at the Centre de Physique Théorique in Marseille, France, and at the Max-Planck-Institut für Physik in Munich, Germany. From 2002 until 2013 he has worked as a researcher and developer in the fields of Grid- and Cloud-Computing, as well as Big-Data at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (formerly Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe), where he has been involved in the CrossGrid, GermanGrid, g-Eclipse, and Large Scale Data Facility projects.
Dr. Sven Gabriel

Sven has studied chemistry at the Rheinisch-Westfälische-Technische Hochschule Aachen. In 2001 he obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry, where he worked on methods to simulate Circular Dichroism Spectra of bio-organic compounds. Afterwards he started working on climate research at the Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, making use of satellite trace gas concentration measurements for atmospheric modelling. Since beginning of 2005 he is involved in the LHC Grid Computing project, working first for GridKA, the German Tier 1 computing center, and currently at the Tier 1 center Nikhef, the Dutch National Institute for Sub-atomic Physics.
Gemfony scientific
Gemfony scientific is a spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology(KIT). Its goal is to host, maintain and further develop software projects with a scientific origin, and to facilitate the technology transfer into the commercial realm, wherever possible.
It is our ambition to make Open Source versions of our software projects available to the public, wherever possible. Hence we believe to both serve the general good and to simultaneously help promote valuable projects that otherwise would go unnoticed.
Apart from our programming expertise, we also offer a comprehensive set of services. See for further information.
